Khalistan Referendum Leader
Inderjit Singh Gosal Arrest: Following the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Inderjit Singh Gosal, the leader of the Khalistan referendum campaign in Canada, has been arrested by Canadian police on weapons charges. Gosal is also the coordinator of Sikhs for Justice, a militant group allegedly linked to Babbar Khalsa International, which was previously accused of violence at a Toronto temple.
Canadian police have arrested Inderjit Singh Gosal, who led the Khalistan referendum campaign in Canada after the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Gosal is also the Canadian coordinator for the militant group Sikhs for Justice and has links to Babbar Khalsa International, a terrorist organization.
This action comes shortly after talks between India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his Canadian counterpart, Nathalie Drouin, in Delhi last week. The arrests, made on multiple firearms charges, signal a shift from Canada's previous stance. A Khalistani group threatened to surround the Indian consulate in Vancouver; the new ambassador was targeted.
Gosal allegedly planned violence against Indian consulates in Canada. Gosal was also accused in last year's temple violence in the Greater Toronto Area, but was released after a brief detention. Relations deteriorated following the killing of wanted terrorist Nijjar, with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accusing Indian agencies of masterminding the attack.
In October last year, India said it was recalling its High Commissioner and five other diplomats due to Ottawa's attempt to link the Nijjar case. It also expelled several Canadian diplomats. Gosal became a front-runner in anti-India activities in Canada and campaigned aggressively for a Khalistan referendum. Several incidents of confrontation occurred as pro-Khalistan activists tried to persuade other Sikhs to subscribe to their separatist agenda.
Gosal also served as one of SFJ chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannu's personal security officers during his visits to Canada. He was also allegedly involved in planning violence against Indian consulates in Canada. A few months ago, he revealed that Canadian police had asked him to be "cautious" about a possible attack.
Canadian police later claimed that Gosal was among 13 citizens targeted by criminal violence perpetrated by pro-Khalistan elements. He told a Canadian website, "As the organizer of the Khalistan referendum, I face threats to my life from agents and representatives of the Indian government, but I must continue my work..."
